Construction industry developed a guideline for certifying buildings that are environment friendly.  This guidelines are offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.  They developed a unique system and method or scoring buildings as Green qualified called “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” or LEED.  It has been the standard to define sustainable and high-performance buildings.

There are six areas from which the categories for LEED point system was taken.  These include sustainable site, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, energy and atmosphere and green design innovations.  LEED is one good tool you can use if you want to learn how you can make your own home more green even if you don’t plan to get certification.  What USGBC offers include LEED-ND certification for neighborhood development, LEED-NC certification for new commercial construction and major renovation projects, LEED-CI certification for commercial interior projects, LEED-CS certification for core and shell projects, LEED-H certification for homes and LEED EB Certification for existing buildings.
